About Linux Kernel

Linux Kernel is an open source operating system kernel originally developed by Linus Torvalds to be used on Linux and other Unix-like operating systems.

Linux aims towards POSIX or Portable Operating Sytem Interface for Unix and single UNIx specification compliance. It features modern fully-fledged Unix, including true preemptive multitasking (both in user and kernel mode), virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, memory management, the internet protocol suite and threading.

Linux can now run on both 32 and 64 bit variants. It can also be ported to most general purpose 32 or 64 bit architectures, as long as they have a page memory management unit (PMMU) and a port of the GNU C compiler.
